  1. Hello!

I am sending you a quick email letting you know about a cycling fundraiser that Special Olympics Missouri is putting on the weekend of Sept. 20-21, 2014 on the Katy Trail. It’s two two-day simultaneous rides (one starts in Clinton, the other starts in St. Charles) with both of them ending in Jefferson City on Sunday, Sept. 21. It’s a new fundraiser being organized by Special Olympics Missouri to benefit it’s more than 17,000 athletes around the state. We’re working closely with Missouri State Parks and the people who organize their annual Katy Trail Ride in trying to make ours as similar as possible because they have the expertise obviously.

I understand that you may be from out of state and that’s okay because we’re all about making a difference in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities better regardless of what state they call home. Plus this is a great opportunity for you to ride one of the best multi-use trails in the whole country in the Katy Trail.

Along the way we are going to have demonstration stops where we will invite our local athletes out to take part in a 1.5-2 hour demo where we will teach our athletes the basics and safety components of cycling. Cycling isn’t a sport we currently offer, but other state programs do and I’d like to get to the point to where it’s offered here in Missouri, but we need to build that base up first. We’re working closely with PedNet (www.pednet.org) out of Columbia to develop the stations involved in the demos. We’ve also received 300 free helmets from MODOT to give away to the athletes who come to the demos.

Anyway, registration is currently open (www.somo.org/cycleforthefuture) and we’re really trying to push the ride to as many people as possible because we’re low on registrants right now. We’re going to have the ride regardless of how many people sign up, so I don’t want people to be scared by the fact that only a handful of people are currently signed up.

Do you think you might be able to help us get the word out? We’d greatly appreciate any kind of help in promoting the event.

Feel free to contact me at Schatsiek@somo.org or call the office at 573-635-1660 and ask for Brandon.

I appreciate any help/advice you may be able to give us. Thanks!

    Brandon Schatsiek
